The University of California, UC Berkeley school of law admissions process is one that’s holistic and doesn’t only take academics into consideration, but also your drive and personal qualities among others.

UC Berkeley was founded in 1868 and the school of law has earned it’s place at the top echelons of the most prestigious law schools in USA, ranking in the top 10 law schools in the USA.

UC Berkeley law school admission requirement

To qualify to apply to study the Juris Doctor (JD) program at the UC Berkeley school of law, there are certain requirements one must meet.

GPA and academic requirements

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required. UC Berkeley clearly states they do not have a cut-off point for GPA score, but they do look out for exceptional students and as a reference, the median GPA score for the 2019-2020 JD first year class was 3.81.

The UC Berkeley school of law admissions board also consider overall undergraduate academic record. This will include the age of the grades, exceptionally high grades, the difficulty of coursework, time commitments while attending college, grading patterns at the school attended, and grade trends or discrepancies.

LSAT score

Again, UC Berkeley does not set a minimum requirement for LSAT scores. But as a reference, the median LSAT score for the 2019-2020 JD first year class was 168.

When evaluating your LSAT score, the UC Berkeley school of law admissions board will consider whether similar tests have under-predicted your academic performance in the past. For example, if you can document that you have earned exceptionally high undergraduate grades but performed poorly on the SAT, then this may be taken into account in evaluating your potential to succeed in law school.

Recommendation letters

Applicants are required to submit 2 to 4 recommendation letters with their application.

Personal statement and resume

Written components of the application, including a personal statement (ideally four, double-spaced pages), a resume (no page limit), and optional or required addenda.

LSAC Completed application form

A completed online application form. The form is available online via the Law School Admission Council (LSAC).  It becomes available each year on September 1.

UC Berkeley law school Early Decision program

If you have researched your law school options thoroughly and have determined that Berkeley Law is your first choice law school, then you may wish to apply through the binding early decision (BED) application. Applications open from 1st September with Early decision application deadline being November 15th.
