University of New York Law School admission requirements

The University of New York Law School take several factors into consideration when selecting which applicants to admit.

Factors such as academic history, GPA score, LSAT score, personal qualities, work experience, community involvement among others are considered vital to every application. Application to NYU law is done through LSAC.

Academic requirements

Applicants to the JD program (Juris Doctorate) must possess a minimum of a Bachelors/baccalaureate degree. Applicants must also be of age 18 or above. Applicants are to submit their undergraduate transcripts as part of their application.

What LSAT score do I need for NYU?

A median score of 172 or better is required to have a better chance at admission. Even though NYU Law states that no rigid LSAT score is set to ensure admission, it is worthy of note that the 2021 fall class had the following LSAT stats:

  • 75th percentile: 174
  • 50th percentile: 172
  • 25th percentile: 170

What GPA score do I need for NYU Law?

A median Grade point average (GPA) of 3.86 or better is required to boost an applicant’s chances of admission. Again, NYU states no combination of LSAT and GPA scores can guarantee admission, it is however worthy to note that the following was the GPA stats of the 2021 Fall class:

  • 75th percentile: 3.93
  • 50th percentile: 3.86
  • 25th percentile: 3.73

Personal Statement

As part of the application, NYU law requires applicants to submit a personal statement, which details their motivation, personal qualities that will ensure success in the legal community etc.

The personal statement provides an opportunity for the applicant to supplement the information provided in the application since there will be no interview in the initial application review stage.

Letters of recommendation

Two letters of recommendation from academic and professional life are required depending on the applicant.

For applicants who have experienced educational or socio-economic disadvantage, the admissions Committee evaluates work experience and extracurricular and community activity for evidence of advancement, leadership, and capacity for assuming responsibility other than basing much on test scores and academic performance.

The letters must provide substantive information about the applicant’s abilities, activities, and personal qualities.
