Admissions Process

Application Deadlines

Character and Fitness

During your application, you will come across the character and Fitness questionnaire which assesses your suitability to practice the legal profession. Remember that in addition to bar examinations, state bar associations can request for your entire application including the character and fitness answers to assess your suitability to be admitted to the bar.

School Transcripts

Transcripts are central to your application to the University of Chicago law School and it must include all undergraduate and graduate school transcripts that shows all your academic performance at the undergraduate and any graduate schools you attended. LSAC Credential Assembly Service (CAS) is where all academic transcripts are to be submitted.

LSAT

For your application to be market complete, you must submit at least one LSAT writing on file taken within the last five years. Remember that you are require to submit all LSAT scores taken within the last five years.

Resume

A detailed resume covering educational history, extracurricular activities, community and volunteer activities, and all full or part-time work experience, all with durations indicated.

Letters of Recommendation

Two letters of recommendation are required which must cover areas such as your academic promise, as well as personal qualities such as intellectual curiosity, enthusiasm, and commitment.

Personal Statement

Essential to your application is a personal statement which should demonstrate your contribution to the Law School community beyond academics and should demonstrate your ability to communicate your thoughts effectively.

Proof of English Language Proficiency

If English is not your first language, Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet-based test (iBT) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) taken within the last 2-years, are the accepted proof of English language proficiency for admission to University of Chicago law school. Applicants must score at least 104 total for the TOEFL. Applicants must score at least 7.5 overall and no less than 7.0 for each section for the IELTS.

Applicants who in the 10-years prior to applying, have obtained a post-secondary degree in the following countries are exempted from proof of English proficiency; Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Hong Kong, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Singapore, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Kingdom, the United States.

Scholarships

Every student admitted to the University of Chicago Law School is automatically considered for scholarships. Admitted students who would like their financial need to be considered must complete the FAFSA and a UChicago Need Application (candidate and parent sections). The FAFSA and need application for admitted students is due typically two weeks after the date of your admission and submissions received after the deadline will not be considered unless approval from the Admissions & Financial Aid Office has been received.
